Iggy Pop is very often quoted as"The godfather of Punk" and with justified reason. Almost every punk band that have preceded Iggy & The Stooges, have taken something from them musically whether they realised it or not. This superb box set is certainly a worthwhile addition to any collection even if punk is not your thing.' The Stooges' influence on much of today's music makes this selection of live recordings, rarities and studio outtakes from the Raw Power sessions a real collectors item.
Is it possible that someone was following the Stooges around circa 1972-1973, taping their every move? It certainly seems that way, as evidenced by the overabundance of outtakes and demos that has surfaced from the group's Raw Power period. The most exhaustive collection to focus on these tracks arrived in 2005 -- the six-disc box Heavy Liquid. Set up similarly to a previous Stooges box set, Rhino Handmade's 2000 release 1970: The Complete Funhouse Sessions, this is not six discs worth of different rare songs, but rather songs that are repeated over and over again. And unless you're the biggest Stooges fanatic in the universe, there's simply no way you can sit through 13 takes of "I Got a Right." Longtime Stooges fans will undoubtedly be long familiar with most of these selections, as they've been included an countless compilations over the years (mostly on the Bomp! label) -- the aforementioned "I Got a Right," "I'm Sick of You," "Johanna," "Open Up and Bleed," "I Got Nothin'," "Head On," etc. There's not much here that most of the Stooges faithful haven't already heard countless times before. But the packaging is certainly appealing, as it comes with not one but two booklets (which feature essays, rare pictures, and articles from the era). The average Stooges admirer would be able to get by with any one of the single-disc collections of this material (Rough Power, Year of the Iguana, etc.). But if you want it all in one shot, Heavy Liquid is the way to go.

Track List:

Disc One: The Olympic Studio Tapes London 1972 (Previously unreleased. Taken from recently discovered Multi Track master tapes)
The oddest thing about the first disc is that it contains 13 takes of "I Got a Right!" While some may get tired of this, many Stooges fanatics will enjoy it hearing each little minor tweak and difference. A few takes of "Gimme Some Skin", "I'm Sick of You!", "Scene of the Crime" and "Tight Pants" (later known as "Shake Appeal" which shows up on 1973's Raw Power) also were done in this session. Some of these takes and versions were put out on a few Bomp! Records releases through the Iguana Chronicles series. This session also features the only known studio recordings of Barrett Strong's song, "Money (That's What I Want)" and The Kingsmen "Louie Louie".

The third disc shows an assortment of songs from various rehearsals in Detroit, Michigan from February to April 1973. Many of these songs, including "Open Up and Bleed" and "Rubber Legs" were supposedly going to be songs to make up the band's fourth record. Recordings from February 20 and March 11 were not included due to too much tape damage. Next, the other half of the fourth CD and the last two give the listener a taste of how The Stooges sounded when performing live.

The first half of the fourth CD has the band rehearsing at CBS Studios in New York City around the time of July for the forthcoming two days at Max's Kansas City where Iggy Pop nearly killed himself.
