Virgil Thomson once suggested that those who responded to sound with their heads would become rhetoricians while those who responded to it with their bellies would become musicians. Certainly there’s something visceral about Heifetz’s sound: almost every one of the 40-some violinists I’ve interviewed has, when the subject came up, attested to it; and those violinists, like Aaron Rosand, fortunate enough to have heard him live claim to have been electrified by its vibrancy. Among those who considered him the pinnacle of his art: Oistrakh, Szeryng, Stern, Kogan (inspired by Heifetz’s playing in Russia), Rosand, and, later, Perlman (who considered him his “god,” the greatest of all violinists past and present) and Zukerman. Even Virgil Thomson, a notorious doubter when it came to Heifetz, compared his playing to silk underwear, trading the image from one of almost shocking brilliance to decadent luxury. Henry Roth spoke about the suavity of his tone production; Eric Wen describes it in the accompanying booklet as “seamless and shimmering,” with manifold possibilities for “tender, melting intimacy.” I can add to these voices that of my own experience as a tiny boy, barely emerged from infancy, when I asked my father to mark Heifetz’s 78 of Schubert’s Ave Maria so I wouldn’t mistake it for Mischa Elman’s (with Josef Bonime from 1929), traditionally ensconced next to it in our album. There’s visceral for you—at that time, nothing logical could have persuaded me to prefer Heifetz to Elman. (Incidentally, I believe these two recordings originated an Elman story. Supposedly, when he learned that a store had no copies of his in stock but plenty of Heifetz’s, he simply concluded that his had sold out!)

Since RCA has re-released so many of Heifetz’s major later recordings several times in CD format, it would be natural to wonder which reincarnations they’ve chosen to present in the new “Original Jacket Collection.” I’ve gleaned from telephone conversations with Sony that the collection made use of the “Living Stereo” releases from 2004–2006 for the first five CDs, of the celebrated “Jascha Heifetz Collection” from 1994 for the mono recordings in the sixth through eighth CDs, and again on the “Jascha Heifetz Collection” for the last two, once again stereo, CDs, “Jascha Heifetz in Concert,” presenting his last recital from October 23, 1972. Eric Wen contends that Heifetz’s style after 1950 suggests to a lesser degree the old world of Kreisler; a comparison of Heifetz’s early recordings with the later ones often makes that vividly clear. Compare the Sibelius Concerto’s first recording from 1935 with Beecham with his later recording with Hendl in 1959, which many feel has set the benchmark. Though surely not apples and oranges, they’re not identical twins either. A friend of mine, hearing the earlier recording (and the Concerto) for the first time, considered it “scary.” I doubt he would have found the steelier, tauter later version so frightening, though it also raises goose bumps. But despite preferences for either later or earlier Heifetz, these recordings will form an essential part of every violinist’s library; and, of them, these remasterings should be about the best available. Then, too, there’s the added attraction of the original covers—modified slightly on the front to accommodate the various pairings in the collection, though the notes and artwork on the back and the information about such things as the “New ‘Orthophonic’ High Fidelity” remain untouched. Notes from other jackets appear, at least in excerpts, in the booklet, which also includes some photography by the violinist’s son, Jay. These features may appeal most strongly to those who have disposed of their collections of LPs and feel either sad or guilty about it.
