If you have used Revit Architecture, you’ve probably noticed that the entire model is based on the families you have in place. If you know how to make families, that’s great. If you don’t, then this tutorial from veteran trainer and author Eric Wing is for you. It covers the process of creating a family and adding parameters, 3D elements, symbolic lines, and materials. You’ll also learn about template selection, reference planes, solid forms, void forms, line-based families, arrays in families, nested families, Yes/No functions, mathematical expressions, if statements, and in-place families. By the end of the course you will have mastered this important aspect of working successfully in Revit.

In this course you’ll learn the fundamentals of working with families in Revit Architecture. The contents of this course include:

Creating a Basic Profile Family
In this chapter we will explore the process of creating a basic family. You will learn how to choose the right template, create various reference planes and corresponding dimensions, ensure that the family has proper parametric labels, and add types to the family. We will also create a profile, flexing it to make sure it works properly with our family.

Creating a Door Family
In this chapter we will tackle the task of adding intricate elements to a door in our wall. We will start by choosing a template, then edit the opening and modify any parameters while putting in the jamb. We will follow this by creating a casing sweep, insert panel, and swing for our door, which we will follow with a door that is presentable in our floor plan.

In-Place Massing
In this fun chapter you’ll learn how to make some truly remarkable shapes. We’ll start by creating an in-place mass family, followed by a curtain panel patterned family that provides some very imaginative shaping.

Complex Families
This chapter will focus on working with families involving stiles. First, we will tackle a line-based family, followed by a somewhat generic, yet very relevant stile family. Then, getting a bit more complex, we will get into creating parameter formulas, an if statement, and a yes/no parameter.
